An independent watch brand making a dress watch isn’t entirely rare, but such watches are rarely any good. There is a gaping canyon between big brands making quality pieces and a slew of trashy brands making trashy dress watches, or as some say, “fashion watches.”
The resultant CNC’d filigree appeals to my engineer’s eye just as much a haute horology movement does to my artist’s heart. Zenith’s caliber 3600 has that skeletonized-grey look of the Oris Pro-Pilot X and reminds me this is more like a Terminator movie than The Great Gatsby.
The most obvious design feature on these watches is the slide rule bezel. While its layout is identical to the Breitling Navitimer’s, the Hamiltons feature more precise details, like markers to more easily calculate speed, distance and fuel usage.

In 2015 Jonathan Ferrer designed his first watch inspired by a coffee machine and powered by a Ronda quartz movement. He subsequently launched on Kickstarter and New York’s Brew Watch Co. was born. Since then, Brew have subsequently released the automatic HP-1 (HP for High Pressure, 2017), the mechaquartz Retrograph (2018) and the mechaquartz Mastergraph (2018). Now, Brew are back in 2020 with the Retromatic and out go the mechaquartz movements and in come the automatics, including Brew’s first Swiss movement.
